The United Samaritans Foundation was established as a nonprofit corporation in 1994. In early 1995, Foundation volunteers began delivering meals to low income residents and the homeless of southern Stanislaus County, supplementing the local “Daily Bread Ministry” that had been launched three years previously at Turlock’s Sacred Heart Church.

In January 1996 the Foundation leased two buildings in Turlock, renovated the kitchen and moved the Turlock truck to that site. An emergency food pantry and clothes closet were soon added, and a new warehouse was constructed in 1997. Also, in 1997, the Foundation purchased two half-block sections in Hughson and demolished several existing structures. Construction of a new complex on the site was completed in 1998.  A second warehouse and new office and kitchen facilities were built in Turlock in 2002 to help accomodate the growing needs of low-income residents and the homeless in the area.

The United Samaritans Foundation currently operates four mobile food service trucks from our facilities in Turlock, Hughson, and Modesto, delivering nutritious lunches to nine Stanislaus communities five days per week. Volunteers help staff the food pantry, clothes closet and various other services. In Turlock the Foundation facility offers homeless services including a drop-in breakfast center, laundry and shower facilities, and the use of a phone number and address to aid in connectivity and job searches. In Hughson, the Community Center complex includes a county library, county medical office, pharmacy and a cafe. Nonprofit groups maintain offices at the Turlock and Hughson locations, and community organizations regularly use the Foundation’s facilities for meetings and special events.
