The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federally funded program, by USDA, through the California Department of Health Services.

It is a nutrition education and supplemental food program that helps pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children under five to eat well and stay healthy. Program staff provides individual and group nutrition education and counseling; breastfeeding education and support, supplemental foods, and referrals to health care and other supporting agencies.

The goal of the WIC program is to decrease the risk of poor birth outcomes and to improve the health of participants during critical times of growth and development. To meet this goal, we provide nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion, medical care referrals, and specific supplemental nutritious foods which are high in protein and/or iron. The specific nutritious foods provided to participants include peanut butter, beans, milk, cheese, eggs, iron-fortified cereal, iron-fortified infant formula and juices.

HOW TO APPLY FOR WIC

A person can find out if they qualify for the WIC program by calling the Health Services Agency main office at 209-558-7377. After a short screening process, the person is given an enrollment appointment. Most participants are enrolled and receive benefits within two weeks of the initial phone call.
