Bike Route Classifications
Class 1 Bike Path – Physically separated from motorized traffic by an open space barrier. Cyclists are not required to use bicycle paths but are encouraged to do so when they are available.
Class 2 Bike Lane – A portion of roadway that has been designated by striping, signing, and pavement markings for the preferential or exclusive use of bicyclists. If a usable bicycle lane is provided, cyclists should use it.
Class 3 Bike Route – A segment of a system of bikeways designated by the jurisdiction having authority with appropriate directional and informational markers.
Requirements for Bicyclists
Most bicyclists ride on the road. It is extremely important that both bicyclists and motor vehicle drivers understand the rules that make for safe use of the road.
Section 21200 of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states:
“Every person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all of the rights and is subject to all of the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle…”

Bicycle Licenses
10.48.020 License–Required. It is unlawful for any resident of the city to operate any bicycle on any street, road, highway or other public property within the jurisdiction of the city unless such bicycle is licensed in accordance with this chapter.
Licenses can be purchased at City of Waterford, 101 E Street for a $5.00 fee.
