Starting a New Business

Do you have a great idea for a business? Don’t know where to start?

Fictitious Business Name

To operate a business that does not include your last name, you will need a Fictitious business name statement from Stanislaus County. You will need to file a Fictitious Business Name Statement for your business if:

  • Individuals with a business name that does not include the surname of the individual or a name that suggests the existence of an additional owner.
  • Partnerships or other associations of persons with a name that does not include the surname of each general partner or a name that suggests existence of an additional owner, such as “Company” or “Associates”, and for a limited partnership, any name other than the name as on file with the Secretary of State.
  • Corporations with a name not stated in its articles of incorporation.

Business License

The City of Waterford Municipal Code requires that all businesses have a current business license.  Learn more about business licenses and how to obtain one.

Other Permits and Requirements

Staff will help identify any additional permits that may be required for your business and the departments or agencies where these may be obtained (e.g., Air Pollution Control District, Regional Water Quality Control Board, Environmental Health, Sheriff’s Office, and Fire District). It is your responsibility to make sure your business has all necessary permits.
